As some of you may know, Gorillas are a passion of mine. All subspecies of Gorillas are in serious crisis right now and I urge you to consider donating to either the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI) or WildLifeDirect, both of whom are struggling to help.

DFGFI is dedicated to the conservation and protection of gorillas and their habitats in Africa. We are committed to promoting continued research on their threatened ecosystems and education about their relevance to the world in which we live. In collaboration with government agencies and other international partners, we also provide assistance to local communities through education, health, training and economic development initiatives.
WildlifeDirect was founded and is chaired by paleontologist and African conservationist Dr Richard Leakey, who is credited with putting an end to the elephant slaughter in Kenya in the 1980s. Throughout Africa conservationists are carrying out critical work to protect wildlife and habitats, under difficult, isolated and often dangerous conditions. WildlifeDirect was established to provide support to these conservationists via both the use of blogs – this enables anybody, anywhere to play a direct and interactive role in the survival of some of the world’s most precious species- and by directing 100% of donations received to the intended conservationists in Africa.

Both the DFGFI and WildlifeDirect are responding to the immediate crisis in the Congo, where at least 9 mountain gorillas have been killed this year:
January – 2 Silverbacks killed
January – 1 adult female missing since this time
June – Kabirizi Family attack: 1 female killed, 1 female missing, 1 orphan (SEE PHOTO ABOVE)
July – Rugendo Family: Silverback killed, 4 females killed, 1 orphan, 1 infant still missing/presumed dead. Total toll of attack on Rugendo family: 6 dead (including infant presumed dead), 1 orphan in care. Family down from 12 members to 5, with only one female now in the group that is not of a reproductive age.
August – Silverback Lulengo missing since January found.

In addition to the immediate Mountain Gorilla Crisis, Western Lowland gorillas were recently determined to be critically endangered, due to the precipitous decline in their numbers, some 60% in 20 years!
